This painting is based on a photograph of the Scottish Highlands, specifically a scene near the Kyle of Lochalsh or an island like Harris. I was also attracted to the small, white cottage in the distance, most likely a Crofters Cottage. On a trip to the Highlands, I was amazed at the sudden appearance of a lone cottage, seemingly in the middle of nowhere, surrounded by hills or sitting alone beside a Loch. The solitude must be so tranquil, but also I could see the snow sticks along the single track roads, and couldn’t imagine what it would be like to live there during the harsh winter months.
